November 26, 2008 – Elizabeth (Betty) Sweeney, RSCJ, educator and financial executive, passed away November 26, 2008 in Albany, New York. A funeral Mass will be held at Teresian House in Albany on December 1, 2008, at 11 a.m.
Between 1939 and 1993, Sister Sweeney’s many contributions to Sacred Heart education included building part of Newton College in Boston (now Boston College) and serving as provincial of the Washington DC province. She also served on the Kenwood Board of Trustees in Albany from 1972 to 1981 and as a trustee of Stone Ridge Academy in Washington DC from 1989 to 1993.
Sister Sweeney joined the Religious of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in 1936 and made her final profession in 1944.
She was born in Rochester, New York, in 1914; her parents, both deceased, were Michael Edward Sweeney and Helen Hammond Sweeney. Sister Sweeney is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ann Johantgen of Brockport, NY, and Jean Sweeney of Rochester, NY, and by a number of nieces and nephews. A third sister, Helen Sweeney, pre-deceased her and was also a Religious of the Sacred Heart.
