Marie Assunta Valerio, RSCJ, died at Our Lady of Fatima Villa, Saratoga, CA, on March 24, 2009, after a long illness.
One of six children born in North Berwick, Scotland, to Erminto and Stella Valerio, Sister Valerio (“Val”) entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in Dublin, Ireland on July 14, 1939; made her first vows in 1942; and, after teaching in both Ireland and Scotland, was finally professed in Rome, August 1, 1947.
After short teaching stints in both Egypt and France and twenty-eight years teaching at a teacher training college in Scotland, where she had to retire at age 65, Val came to the United States. She taught at Sheridan Road Academy in Chicago for twenty years before retiring at Oakwood, CA in 1998. Val was one of a number of her sisters who was transferred to the skilled care nursing facility, Our Lady of Fatima Villa, in 2007.
