Mater Admirabilis has been an enduring presence in my life. A portrait very true to the original in Rome was the focal point in the study hall of the Academy at Grand Coteau. As a student at the Academy in the 40’s I felt her love and caring. She presided over our prayers and was always there to turn to for help in our studies.
On February 9, 1952 my Lt. Marine husband and I left our wedding reception ready and eager to embark on our new life together. Our first stop was at the Academy at Grand Coteau to leave my wedding flowers at the foot of Mater and to receive the blessing of the Reverend Mother, necessary steps to make the vows official.
In July, 1988 my husband, Woods, and I were photographed facing a portrait of Mater, this one in Rome at the Trinita. Our hands held together we once again felt the gift of receiving a special blessing. Along with a beloved picture of the Sacred Heart, Mater holds a place of prominence on the table in our bedroom amid treasured photographs of our family.
For sixty-one years a seven-inch statue of Mater has stood on my kitchen windowsill. She is with me from breakfast makings to dinner clean up. It is a valued reminder of the times we have shared together. Truly, Mater has been with me and guided me in my journey with and to her Son.
Amen, Alleluia!
