Recently, three students from our Network of Sacred Heart Schools in New York City held a fundraiser to help another Sacred Heart School in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The boarding school in Mbansa-Mboma in the Congo had been devastated by fire and looting in February 2014. Sister Shirley Miller, director of Mission Advancement for the Society of the Sacred Heart United States-Canada Province, recently received a donation from these three New York students along with the following letter:“My name is Alexandra, and I am a 7th grader at Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City. When I heard about the fire that devastated our sister school, Lycee de MbanzaMboma in the Congo, I felt so bad for the students and teachers there. While my family and I were in St. John that spring break, I discovered these very cute dolls. My dad and I thought that it would be a good idea to try to sell these dolls and raise money for the Lycee. He asked a salesperson for the manufacturer of the dolls and called them. When we told the doll maker our idea, she thought it was a very nice thing to do and sold us the dolls at cost. We then sold the dolls to the Sacred Heart community at our school fair and are contributing 100 percent of the proceeds to the Congo school. We called our booth ‘Cardinals for Congo!’ Along with my friends, Olivia and Chloe, we raised $1,700 to help the school continue to rebuild! Please accept this check on our behalf and send it to the Lycee with thoughts and prayers from us and everyone at Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York City.”
Thank you, Alexandra, Olivia and Chloe!Read more about the 2014 fire at the high school in the Congo.
